BIRD WATCHING AT JAMAICA BAY — Join GNC Executive Director Kurt
Hundgen on an outing to
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, considered one of the best locales for
bird watching in the NY metropolitan area. In his former position
in the Department of Ornithology at the Bronx Zoo, Kurt led many
excursions to this premier location. Participants can either meet
us at the Refuge, or ride with us. (We can provide transportation
for 15 people in GNC vehicles—sign up required-first come, first
served). Van leaves GNC promptly at 8:00 AM. Walk begins
promptly at 9:30 AM. Pre-registration required. Fee:
Members - $25 with transportation, $20 without transportation;
Non-members - $30 with transportation, $25 without
transportation. Moderate walking will be involved. Bring

Mancuso as he explores the Science of Biomimicry, where nature’s
inspirations can turn into solutions to human problems.
Presentation with live animals, and nature walk with a “surprise test”

WORKSHOPSGardening as a hobby is generally thought to be both relaxing and rewarding, but it can also be sustainable, educational, and productive. Join Naturalist Educator, Jennifer Sloan, and special guest, Russell Greenleaf, founder of Greenleaf Gardens and an expert on sustainable agriculture, for this series on organic gardening. No matter your experience level or age there is something for anyone who loves to dig, grow, harvest, or just learn about plants. Come be a part of this exciting expansion of our gardens! are the deer! Join Museum Curator Travis Brady as he discusses
the ever-growing population of white-tailed deer in Westchester

— Cut flowers are nice, but potted ones make a lasting
impression. Join naturalist Jennifer Sloan to decorate your
one-of-a-kind pot, then fill it with a flowering plant to present to
Mom, then stay for a demonstration and Q&A with Russell Greenleaf

PLANTING — To build a strong garden bed, you
must feed your soil, not the plants. Jennifer and Russell will
show you several easy yet amazingly productive methods to growing a
bounty of healthy fruit and vegetable plants. Children will hear
the Legend of the Three Sisters: Corn, Beans, and Squash. Class runs approximately

SUN 10:30 AM – ORGANIC WEED/PEST CONTROL & EFFICIENT WATERING
METHODS — Pesticides are damaging to the
environment, and only a small percentage reaches its intended
target. Jennifer and Russell will discuss how to spot a pest
problem and what organic solutions you can use to combat them.
Also, learn how to prepare for summer droughts. Children will
play a “Garden Visitors Friend or Foe” game. Class runs approximately

woods, in the pond, in the rain, in the wind. Join naturalist
Jennifer Sloan on a woodland “ listening walk.” Inspired by what
we hear, we will use items provided by Mother Nature to make
instruments and mimic nature’s orchestra. Members-$3,

GREEN FAMILY FESTIVAL — There’s something for everyone.
Enjoy family fun with musical entertainment, petting zoo, hayrides,

now available to help you save energy and enjoy a more environmentally
friendly lifestyle. Refreshments, gift items available for

SUN 2:00 PM – CREATURES OF WOODFROG POND — Join naturalist
John Mancuso as he explores the world of Woodfrog Pond. Short
pond slide show introduction, live animals, and a chance to use a net
and dip into the pond to catch some of the creatures living

— It’s shocking, it’s sensational, it’s stupendous – it’s science at
work. Come assist the Mad Scientist (a.k.a. Museum Curator Travis
Brady) in performing wacky experiments, and discover some of the
weirder wonders of science. You are guaranteed a good

8:30 AM – MEMBERS’ FAMILY CAMP-OUT — Enjoy a night of nature on
the grounds of the Nature Center as we host our first family
camp-out. You supply your tent and sleeping bag, we’ll supply the
nature. Join us for an informal barbecue, then explore our
moonlit trails with a GNC naturalist in search of owls and other night
creatures. Camp-out limited to ten families. Reservations
required. First come, first served. Each tent must include
a minimum of one adult. Fee: $90 per family (immediate family

now! Discover what to harvest and when, some culinary uses for
